Electromobility in the focus of New Energy Husum
There was a time when the whole country was talking about electric cars. Chancellor Angela Merkel personally campaigned for this technology with the slogan, a million electrically powered cars on German roads by 2020. By the start of 2015, of the 44 million registered passenger cars less than 19,000 were electric. Despite the federal government grant initiative introduced at the beginning of March, electromobility is still in the shadows. Despite this, the topic is being pushed all the more in Schleswig-Holstein - primarily in North Frisia and particularly by New Energy Husum: it has been advocating eco-powered mobility from the beginning and continuously expanded this section of the fair.
This year there will be a special show featuring electric cars from a variety of carmakers, including BMW, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault and VW - and the 1,088-horsepower RIMAC Concept One is a treat for all car fans looking for a combination of driving enjoyment and environmental protection. From 0 to 100 kph in 2.8 seconds, a battery range of up to 500 kilometres, and a carbon chassis: this two-seater sports car is a four-wheeled giant - and one that gets off to a flying start with ecologically-friendly electric power.
The importance that New Energy attributes to electric cars is reflected in the scope of the visitor forums. On all four days of the fair, attendees can find answers to such questions as: are there any high performance battery systems, and are there enough charging stations? Is an electric car really economical, and can I afford one? Who has ideas for combining living and mobility? And a special treat for all those who love to drive: you can test drive many of the electric cars on the special test track - because of its electric propulsion it may be unusually quiet, but for that it is all the more enjoyable! This is where the motto of New Energy Husum, that a visit to the fair is not just about learning more, but should also be fun, is brought to life.
But this is not the only reason why so much space is given over to electromobility - North Frisia is already a trailblazer for this future-oriented technology, even if the numbers are still somewhat modest. Official figures show that 144 electric cars have been registered in the county, which is about a quarter of the total number in the state - even though the west-coast county boasts just six per cent of the population between the North and Baltic Seas. And according to Stephan Wiese, half of the 62 public electric charging stations in the state are also in the county. Wiese is project manager at the eE4mobile cooperative, which has been promoting electric cars for years, and which is also showing at New Energy Husum; and Mr Wiese will also be moderating the visitor forum in Hall 2.
Because North Frisia also aims to be the climate-friendliest county in Germany by 2020, the topic is also highly rated by county climate manager Gunnar Thöle: "Even if many think it is utopic - the technology and the market for electrically powered vehicles, bicycles, and especially also larger vehicles, is developing very rapidly." The county administration is setting a good example, in that it already has an electrically powered official car that, according to press officer Hans-Martin Slopianka, "is very popular with its users".
There can be no denying that in order to be really sustainable, the fuel for electric cars must come from renewable sources as a matter of principle. This is not a problem in the region that is known throughout Germany as the cradle of the wind industry and where 1200 megawatts of installed wind power is connected to the grid, which is more than a quarter of the total capacity (almost 4,000 MW) in Schleswig-Holstein. But we are also active in the cause of electromobility statewide: the number of electric cars registered in Schleswig-Holstein is on the increase, says Jens Sandmeier from the state coordination office at WTSH (Schleswig-Holstein Business Development and Technology Transfer Corporation); The federal motor transport authority will be publishing the latest figures at the end of March.
Just like North Frisia's climate manager, Sandmeier is also convinced that electric power will prevail. It's just a matter of time, says the WTSH expert: "In combination with the use of electricity from renewable energy sources, innovative solutions in the mobility sector will make a key contribution to the energy transition." |
