      Intertek Studies Of OCTAL Production Technology Highlight Successful Sustainability Efforts In The Reduction Of Energy Used For Producing PET Resin

      The global threat of energy shortages, rising costs, and increasing legislation to curb emissions of greenhouse gases have all driven the development of deeper sustainability standards for the packaging industry. OCTAL continues to monitor and improve its sustainability efforts to reduce it's carbon footprint. OCTAL knows it cannot wait until tomorrow --- action must be taken now.

Razeem, Project Engineer - Sustainability, OCTAL. "Reducing operating costs and planning for future CO2 emissions legislation will only benefit companies in the long run. Our company is pleased with recent Intertek testing results proving that, based on an energy computation analysis of OCTAL's PET resin production, our company's continued sustainability efforts are highly effective."

      In mid 2011, Intertek Expert Services, an internationally-recognized, independent testing service, generated an energy consumption evaluation of the technology used to produce OCTAL PET resin. The study considered all emissions related to such production at the OCTAL Salalah facility in Oman, and concluded that the manufacturing of OCTAL PET resin maintains a very low --- therefore environmentally-beneficial --- carbon footprint.

      In particular, Intertek Expert Services studied the annual energy consumptionof MTR (Melt To Resin technology) used to produce OCTAL's PET resin. Criterial included grid electricity and heat consumption, both of which use natural gas in this instance. Comparisons then were made to conventional SSP (Solid State Post Condensation technology) used by other PET manufacturers. All comparative data taken from Eco-Invent, Association of Plastics Manufacturers (APME), Boustead (1997,2002.)

      Below are the key findings from Intertek comparing OCTAL PET resin to conventional bottle grade PET resin:

      • The production of OCTAL PET resin consumes 63.3% less grid electricity when compared to conventional bottle grade resin. By using less grid electricity OCTAL saves 215 Kwh for every ton of resin produced. In turn, OCTAL reduced the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by 190.26 (kgCO2/t). This translates into a total 2010 reduction of 42,998,762.26 kg of CO2. To understand this impressive reduction in simple terms: OCTAL's reduction of CO2 emissions can be compared to the production of CO2 caused by flying a plane filled with 320 people 33 times around the world.

      • The production of OCTAL PET resin consumes 22.7% less heat energy when compared to conventional bottle grade resin. By using less heat energy OCTAL is able to save 500 Mj(megajoules) per ton of resin produced. In turn, OCTAL reduced the amount of C02 release into the atmosphere by 35.79 (kgCO2/t). For OCTAL's entire 2010 production of PET Resin this is a total savings of 8,089,829 Kg of CO2. This savings can be equated to the production of CO2 caused by flying a plane filled with 320 people 6 times around the world.
