NPE2012: Kautex touts rapid prototyping for packaging applications, R&D operations

Orlando, FL - Kautex Machines Inc. discussed with PlasticsToday at booth (#1751) its rapid prototyping for packaging applications, which includes a patent-pending shell insert system.

Through rapid prototyping and simulation, Kautex can produce a blowmolded sample within 48 hours from receiving the 3D CAD drawing, said Chuck Flammer, VP sales at Kautex.

Traditionally this process takes about six weeks, Flammer said.

"We believe it is a competitive advantage," he said.

Kautex is a manufacturer of extrusion blowmolding technology, with about 350 employees in Germany, and an additional 120 worldwide.

Research and development are part of Kautex's core philosophy, and the company works to connect market requirements to science. The company recently made a $2 million investment in its R&D facility that conducts customer sampling and trials. The facility houses six machines, and a container lab for product analysis.

Currently under testing at Kautex's R&D facility is a hydraulic shuttle drive, which is a fully electric machine with a modular design, and a projected 11% increase in output. Kautex anticipates the machine will be at K 2013, the international plastics fair, in Düsseldorf, Germany next year.

Kautex recently announced that Suncast Corp., a manufacturer of home and outdoor storage products, invested in blowmolding machines supplied by Kautex, which enables the company to produce large flat panels for its range of sheds and deck boxes.

Prior to buying the blowmolding machines from Kautex, Suncast was primarily an injection molding company. With the new system, Suncast can develop a wider range of products.
