Orlando, FL - The Dow Chemical Co. introduced new resins for the North American packaging market at NPE2012.
Greg Bunker, senior group marketing manager for food and specialty packaging at Dow, told PlasticsToday that the company is always looking for new ways to make a better package.
"We work closely with our customers to offer innovations that help enable the next generation packaging," he said.
Elite Advanced Technology (AT) PE Resins
Dow Chemical Co. launched its line of Elite AT PE resins, which are a proprietary and patent-pending post-metallocene technology built on Dow's Insite technology.
The Elite AT PE resins are for film converters in the food and specialty packaging and industrial and consumer packaging market segments, and are designed to meet the growing demand for higher performance films, and to enhance resin function in sealant film, stretch wrap film, and stretch hood film applications.
"The Elite AT PE resins offer customers consistent, high-performance seal properties with additional properties such as optics, stiffness, toughness, processability, and organoleptics," the company stated. "The products are an excellent option for a wide variety of vertical form fill seal and horizontal form fill seal applications as the resins can keep up with the pace of a fast running form fill seal machine while still producing a reliably sealed bag."
Sealution peel polymers
Dow also announced the expansion of its line of Sealution peel polymers for the packaging market with the addition of the Sealution 210 peel polymer. The complete lineup of these polyolefin-based sealants offer consistent peel strength over time and temperature while remaining reliable during processing and end use, the company stated.
The peel polymers are designed for peel seal package applications including dry food liners, high clarity lidstock and high clarity lamination films.
Dow developed the ready-to-use, single pellet formulations to require no online blending, which may help to reduce errors, defects, and scrap and offers the potential for both time and cost reductions. The seals can help reduce package defects such as splitting, tearing, shredding, and stringing.
Bunker said consumers want better and more convenient packaging, and as a result, brand owners are looking for consistent peel seal qualities.
With using Sealution peel polymers, brand owners and packagers are able to use hot tack strength during filling to achieve fast fills.
Additionally, the Sealution peel polymers offer clarity and transparency, which enables manufacturers to produce packaging with enhanced aesthetics and consumer appeal, with a potential to be fully recyclable when a 100% polyolefin structure is used, the company stated.
For brand owners, the peel strength of packages sealed using Sealution peel polymers remains consistent over time and temperature, even after aging and can reduce defects through lower processing variability and increase processing consistency and efficiencies.
Additional new resin and adhesives
Dow also introduced its Mor-Free L solventless laminating adhesives and the HDPE DMDA 8810 resin for the packaging industry.
The Mor-Free L solventless laminating adhesives comply with FDA regulations and are designed to help to improve lamination productivity and reduce total systems costs. This family of adhesives offers packaging converters advantaged bonding and sealing in uses ranging from basic dry goods packages to more complex and demanding wet food/chemically resistant applications, according to Dow.
The HDPE DMDA 8810 offers reduced chill roll contamination during long runs, which can potentially lead to less machine downtime due to cleanup, the company stated. Additionally, the enhanced product formulation of HDPE DMDA 8810 can result in less edge bead, meaning lower trim waste, which can potentially help to lower costs as well. |
