CHIRON Open House: 1,500 guests over 3 days

Live machining demonstrations on 50 machines, 27 partner exhibitors, numerous international specialist visitors
Some 1,500 guests, including about 300 from abroad, visited this year's CHIRON "Open House" exhibition, held at the company's global headquarters in Tuttlingen from March 26 to 28. Professional visitors from many countries in Europe, Asia and North and South America, were shown many innovations, including a comprehensive live machining exhibition of fifty machining centers, a record number of 27 partner exhibitors and a hugely popular, well-attended event program.
As in previous years, CHIRON employees extended their hospitality to visitors, and provided personal, detailed tours of the in-house exhibition to all in attendance. For many guests, this presented ample opportunity to discuss their own specific projects and concepts directly with CHIRON experts.
Throughout the three-day event, guests were also able to see two young CHIRON employees competing for a trip to the German championship in the "CNC Milling" discipline.
Innovations at the Open House
Two of the new products that were showcased are designed primarily for the machining of large components, and are available in versions with one or two spindles: Series 24 allows the remarkably productive, vertical machining of large workpieces for high-volume production; and features spindle clearances of 400 or 600 mm. In the newly developed Series 26, CHIRON's first horizontal machining center, large workpieces (weighing up to 1,00 kg) can be machined with incredibly high-performance. The double-spindle version of the Series 26 is even available with clearances of 600 and 900 mm.
The third featured innovation, the modular "ToolTower" for the magazine loading of machining tools, ensures the rapid provision of up to 210 tools in the smallest possible space.
The "baseline" has been designed for low-cost entry into the world of CHIRON. This is a new product series of single-spindle, pre-configured machines that are especially suited for manufacturing small to large production volumes.
The horizontal series 26 in focusThe Open House provided many prospective customers a first opportunity to take an in-depth look at the new series 26, CHIRON's first horizontal machining center. The target market for this series primarily consists of companies manufacturing large workpieces, such as gear housings, structural parts or components made of heat-resistant cast iron. The machining center with bridge dimensions of 1,250-3,000 mm, and traverse paths in the Y and Z directions of 630 mm, respectively has been designed for these specific tasks. The single-spindle version is available with an optional swivel head. For the two-spindle version, clearances of 600 or 900 mm are available.The HSK-100 tool taper allows a torque of 390 Nm and spindle speeds of 10,000 rpm, thus enabling a high machining performance. Therefore, cast iron and steel parts can be processed in a particularly productive way. Alternatively, the HSK-63 is used when the focus is on speed. Workpieces such as aluminium structural parts within the automotive or aerospace industries can be produced at a rapid pace. The new series 26 can even be used in four-and five-axis applications: For this purpose, proven CHIRON rotary table technology is available.
The vertical series 24 for large components
The machines of the new vertical series 24 are also designed for the machining of large components, with traverse paths of X: 830 mm / Y: 630 mm / Z: 630 mm, a maximum torque of 390 Nm and spindle speeds of up to 15,000 rpm. The new machines are characterized by powerful cutting performance, with the highest precision and speed. This is attributed to fast rapid feed and acceleration rates, which enable chip-to-chip times of 2.7 seconds. Workpiece changing times of 3.5 seconds also make the whole process even faster. Both sides of the table can carry workpieces weighing up to 1,000 kg.
"Baseline": compact and low-cost centers for the novice
An economical introduction to tried-and-true CHIRON technology and quality is realized with the new "baseline" product line. Here, several single-spindle, completely pre-configured models for 3-axis or 5-axis applications are available.
Well attended: Lectures and user meeting
A comprehensive series of lectures were held on all three days, and for the first time, an "After-hours user meeting" with live music, which rounded out the program. The lectures covering the topics of "Efficient production", "Innovative technologies" and "Optimized processes" were all well attended. Both CHIRON, and external industry experts, as well as visitors took advantage of the events for in-depth discussions and a lively exchange of experiences. The lecture on corporate management "... and at noon I go home" by Detlef Lohmann attracted special attention, and was attended by nearly 250 guests.
Participants for German Skills - Junior Championship in "CNC Milling"
During the Open House, Pascal Mattes, machining technician, and Patrick Aigle, industrial mechanic at CHIRON, qualified in the discipline of "CNC Milling" for the German Junior Championship of the "WorldSkills" Occupational Championship. In autumn, they will attend the AMB in Stuttgart, where the national competitions are held. The German champion may then take part in the WorldSkills Occupational World Championship in São Paolo in August 2015. |
